With recent national disasters such as tropical storms and blizzards, it is important to review your emergency plan and make sure it includes your pets. Living in the Midwest, winter storms may confine us to our homes, and confinement during adverse weather requires preparation.
- All pets should have a collar and tag or be identifiable through an up-to-date microchip or tattoo. If you are not sure about your pet’s microchip status, your veterinarian can scan your pet and direct you how to update your pet’s microchip contact information.
- Make sure you have an ample supply of food, bottled water, and any medications.
- Always keep a photo of your pet(s) and a physical description in case they become loose.
- Should you have to evacuate or relocate with your pet, always have on hand the following:
- A leash, collar or harness for each pet including ID tags
- A collapsible cage for each pet that includes owner identification
- Proper bedding and clean towels
- A litter box for cats, along with litter and a scoop
- Food and water, feeding bowls, and a can opener
- Any medications your pet may be taking, including preventative medications
- Copies of veterinary records, including vaccination history
Hopefully you will never need to put these emergency plans into place, but if you do, your pets will be happy, healthy and safe!
